Your gated PDF is now a training set

B2B content in this region was built to be exchanged for an email address. A growing share of it is being read by something that will never fill in the form.

The gate was a fair trade for a decade. You wrote something genuinely useful, a buyer decided it was worth an email address, and both sides got what they came for. That trade is being repriced from a direction nobody planned for.

Two things are happening at once

The first is that buyers increasingly arrive having already been told what your document says, by an assistant that summarised the ungated half of your site and everybody else's. The second is that what those systems can read, they cite — and what sits behind a form, they cannot.

So the gate now has a cost it did not have: it removes your best material from the place where the buyer's opinion is actually being formed, in exchange for an email address from the shrinking group who still fill in forms.

This is not an argument for ungating everything

  • Ungate the material that establishes your position. That is the part you want quoted, and a quote is worth more than a contact record.
  • Keep the gate on the material that is only useful once someone is already evaluating — the calculator, the assessment, the configuration.
  • Publish the substance as a page, not only as a file. A PDF behind a form is invisible twice over.
  • Measure the ungated material on citation and on assisted pipeline, not on form fills, or you will conclude it failed.
The question is no longer what will they trade an email address for. It is what do you want said about you in a room you are not in.
