Activation budgets are up and the measurement is still a headcount

Live and experiential spending across Southeast Asia keeps growing on evidence that would not survive a media review.

Every other line in the plan is defended with attribution. Activation is defended with attendance, and attendance is a measure of the venue.

Three measures that actually hold up

  • What proportion of attendees can be identified afterwards, and by what mechanism agreed before the event.
  • What those identified people did in the following month against a matched group who did not attend.
  • What the content produced on site went on to earn in paid distribution, which is often the largest return and is almost never counted.

The third one is the interesting one. A well-run activation is a production shoot with an audience in it, and the footage frequently outperforms the purpose-shot campaign asset. Budgeted as an event, that value is invisible. Budgeted as production plus event, the same activity clears its cost twice.

If the only number you bring back is how many people came, you have measured the venue's work, not yours.
