Answer engines are quoting your competitors' documentation, not your campaign
What we learned auditing where AI answers about our clients' categories actually come from across Australia and New Zealand.

We ran the questions a buyer in these categories would actually ask, across the assistants those buyers actually use, and recorded what was cited. The pattern held across every category we tested.
Campaign pages are almost never cited
The pages that get quoted are specific, dated, structured and dull: comparison tables, documentation, pricing explanations, methodology notes. The pages that do not get quoted are the ones with the most budget behind them, because a campaign page makes a claim and an answer engine is looking for something it can attribute.
The practical consequence
- One page that answers a real question precisely will out-cite a campaign microsite indefinitely.
- Dates matter. Undated pages lose to dated ones on identical content.
- If a competitor's documentation is the only structured answer in your category, it becomes the category's answer, including when the question is about you.
This does not replace search work and it is not a separate discipline. It is the same discipline with a different reader, and the reader does not click.
The brand with the best documentation is winning questions the brand with the best campaign is paying for.
